When a 17 year old Tom O'Donoghue visited Armagh planetarium and was given a tour of the facilities, he was disappointed to learn that astronomy had shifted from a visual medium using eyepieces through telescopes to a data led process of observing the heavens through computers and cameras and math was the key to everything in professional astronomy.
Sadly for Tom, math wasn't his strong suit back then, but this experience would instil a drive in him to be the best astrophotographer he could be and since then he has created many, many incredible award winning captures of the heavens that are not only beautiful, but incredibly detailed, all captured with a basic dslr and simple tracking mount!
"I knew I wasn't very good at math, so astrophysics was not a career path, and for me the road into astronomy was through taking photos and processing what's in them!"
